Is there a ChatGPT watermark at all?
Not in the sense most people expect. OpenAI has published research on cryptographic text watermarking and, according to press reporting from 2024, built a working system internally, but the company has not switched it on for ChatGPT output. So what people call a ChatGPT watermark is almost always something more mundane: characters and patterns that travel with the text when you copy it. One distinction is worth keeping: provenance signals for images and audio on the OpenAI side are real and documented, but they do not cover ordinary text.
What actually ends up in copied ChatGPT text
Three families of artifacts show up again and again. First, invisible Unicode: zero width spaces, word joiners, byte order marks and directional marks that sneak in through chat interfaces, PDFs and web editors. Second, typography: curly quotes, long dashes and non breaking spaces that many people read as an instant AI tell. Third, markup: when you copy rich text from a chat window, the HTML underneath can carry class names and attributes from the interface itself.
This tool detects all three. The scanner highlights every suspicious character in yellow, lists its Unicode code point and count, and flags interface markup separately. Nothing is deleted until you decide.
There is a fourth source, and it is the model itself. In April 2025 researchers reported that the o3 and o4-mini models were leaving narrow no-break spaces, code point U+202F, inside longer answers. The finding spread as proof of a hidden marker. OpenAI replied that it was not a watermark but a side effect of large scale reinforcement learning, and within days the characters stopped appearing. The practical conclusion is unchanged: those characters are real and they break imports and file comparisons, but their origin is mundane.
Cleaning without breaking your text

AI detectors weigh many features of a text, among them word choice and predictability, the rhythm of the writing, sentence length and structure, repeated constructions and other stylistic and linguistic patterns. Depending on the tool, punctuation, formatting and unusual characters can affect the score as well. Cleaning removes technical artifacts and fixes typography, and the gentle rewrite can reduce formulaic phrasing. No tool, however, guarantees passing every AI detector.
