Why people look for a SEO Quake alternative

SEOquake by Semrush has been around since 2006 — originally a Firefox add-on, now available across Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Edge, and Safari with around 3,200 ratings in the Chrome Web Store. Its signature features are different from most extensions in this comparison: a SERP overlay that injects backlink counts, Semrush rank, Google index size, and other metrics directly under each search result; keyword density analysis across 1-4 word phrases; an internal/external link analyzer; and CSV export. Connecting a Semrush account unlocks deeper metrics.

SEOquake and DiagnoSEO are different categories. SEOquake leans toward off-page SERP intelligence — what other people see when they search. DiagnoSEO leans toward on-page audit — what you can fix on the page you are viewing. Looking for a SEOquake alternative usually means one of these:

DiagnoSEO is built for the on-page side specifically. No SERP overlay, no off-page metrics, no Semrush dependency — but a deep on-page audit with GEO, keyword scoring, and HTML vs rendered DOM diff.

Where DiagnoSEO wins

On-page depth. SEOquake covers on-page but does not go deep. DiagnoSEO adds the 0-100 SEO score, the 12+ keyword placement scoring, the GEO tab, the HTML vs rendered DOM diff, missing noopener detection, empty anchor warnings, redirect chain visualization with hop scoring, and hreflang duplicate detection. If your work is fixing the current page, DiagnoSEO gives you more to work with.

AI Overviews readiness. The GEO tab is unique among extensions in this comparison. llms.txt detection, FAQPage/Article/speakable schema validation, LLM-parseability metrics. SEOquake predates AI search and does not address it.

HTML vs rendered DOM diff. Critical for SPAs. SEOquake reads the live DOM only.

No Semrush ecosystem lock-in. DiagnoSEO is a free standalone tool with no upsell path that requires an external account. SEOquake's full power requires Semrush ($139+/month).

No telemetry. DiagnoSEO has zero analytics, zero tracking. SEOquake sends some telemetry to Semrush.

Where SEOquake wins

SERP overlay. SEOquake injects metrics directly under every search result on Google, Bing, Yahoo, Yandex, and Baidu. For competitive SERP analysis — "who outranks me, and what is their authority?" — this is genuinely the killer feature. DiagnoSEO does not do SERP overlay.

Backlink data integration. Connected to Semrush, SEOquake surfaces backlink counts and domain authority metrics per SERP result. DiagnoSEO does not include backlink data (the broader paid DiagnoSEO suite has it, but not the free extension).

Multi-search-engine support. SEOquake works on Bing, Yahoo, Yandex, and Baidu — useful for international SEO. DiagnoSEO is Google-focused (and search-engine-agnostic in that it audits the current page regardless of which search brought you there).

Domain comparison tool. SEOquake can compare up to five domains side-by-side on key metrics. DiagnoSEO does not have a comparison tool in the extension.

Keyword density across 1-4 word phrases. SEOquake's keyword density tool is more flexible than DiagnoSEO's basic word frequency.

When to use which

The two extensions serve different needs and complement each other well.

Use SEOquake when researching competitors at the SERP level, doing backlink-based domain comparisons, or working on international (non-Google) search engines.

Use DiagnoSEO when auditing the page you are looking at — fixing on-page issues, scoring against best practices, checking AI Overviews readiness, or inspecting JavaScript rendering.

Many SEO professionals install both. They do not conflict and serve genuinely separate workflows.
